Acne

Acne is a common skin condition seen in 85% of people between the ages of 12 - 24 and it does not “disappear” in adulthood, as over 25% of women and 12% of men in their 40s report having acne. Our skin influences our sense of wellbeing, and acne can be a huge distraction and source of self-consciousness. The highly experienced providers at Foothills Dermatology are experts in acne treatments and with a consultation can tailor the treatment that meets your precise needs.

Selecting Acne Treatment

Acne treatments can be used to diminish both active acne and acne scarring for smoother, healthier skin.

  • All acne treatment will start with topical and possibly oral medications.

  • If your acne is producing scarring, isotretinoin is often recommended.

  • Aesthetic services can help supplement your acne care with treatments that include blackhead/whitehead extractions or chemical peels.

  • With chemical peels, our aesthetician can limit oil buildup, speed up the exfoliation process, and remove damaged skin cells. This procedure may be performed alone or to enhance the results of other acne treatments.

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a very popular option for acne treatment at our Tucson practice that uses light therapy to target hard-to-treat acne. This treatment may be combined with medications for some patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not seeing results with topical and oral medications?

Many patients achieve very satisfactory results with topical and oral medications. For harder to treat acne, some patients combine photodynamic therapy with their medications. Some patients also use skin care products as an adjunct to treatment. During your consultation at Foothills Dermatology, your skin will be evaluated to help you make the right decision.
